数千年来，玛瑙一直是中国的传统玉石之一，是雕琢美术工艺品的上等材料。此笔筒以玛瑙整挖，四方委角，周身光素，巧用其天然色泽为饰。笔筒白色部份质地晶莹通透，宛如冰霜，兼有点点红色斑驳，又若严冬寒梅傲立风雪，形成一幅极具写意韵味的画作。虽无雕工琢刻，却更胜刀斧之工，可谓’大玉不琢，良材不雕’。底部刻「崇兰草堂」四字双行篆书款，崇兰草堂位于方塔园内，明代单体建筑。此件选材大，红色部分颜色鲜亮纯正，色调浑厚沈稳，白色部分亦莹润无暇，红白相间，俏丽动人，用料配色具佳，制作精细，故弥足珍贵。
