Armand Guillaumin studied at the Academie Suisse in the 1860s, where he met Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) and Camille Pissarro (1830-1903). He exhibited alongside his contemporaries in the Salon des Refuses in 1863 and in six of the eight renowned Impressionist exhibitions. In 1886 he befriended Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) whose brother Theo van Gogh (1857-1891), the art dealer, began to sell the artist’s works. Depicted here is La Creuse, an area in central France named after the river Creuse that runs through it, it is a scene often repeated in Guillaumin’s oeuvre. La Creuze drew the attention of numerous other painters and a group soon formed, named Ecole de Crozant after a small village in the region called Crozant.
