Description

Armand Guillaumin, French, 1841-1927- ‘Le Puy Barriou, Paysage de la Creuse, Aout, 1916'; pastel on laid paper, signed in pastel, titled in black chalk on the reverse, 45 x 61.5cm Provenance: Madame Rousso, Paris: Purchased from the Madame Rousso by Eardley Knollys in April 1954 for £12; Bonhams Knightsbridge, October 23, 2013 Lot 8; Private collection, London Note: This lot will be included in the Comite Guillaumin's (Dominique Fabiani, Jacques de La Beraudière and Stephanie Chardeau-Botteri) forthcoming second volume of the catalogue raisonne. A photo-certificate of authenticity from the Comite Guillaumin accompanies this lot. Armand Guillaumin studied at the Academie Suisse in the 1860s, where he met Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) and Camille Pissarro (1830-1903). He exhibited alongside his contemporaries in the Salon des Refuses in 1863 and in six of the eight renowned Impressionist exhibitions. In 1886 he befriended Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) whose brother Theo van Gogh (1857-1891), the art dealer, began to sell the artist’s works. Depicted here is La Creuse, an area in central France named after the river Creuse that runs through it, it is a scene often repeated in Guillaumin’s oeuvre. La Creuze drew the attention of numerous other painters and a group soon formed, named Ecole de Crozant after a small village in the region called Crozant.
