Chinese Qing Dynasty Daoguang Emperor Reign period, Lustrous Phoenix Medallion bowls. Pair porcelain Phoenix medallion bowls, deep curvature flaring upward to form the rim, with a slightly raised footing. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean pale white underglaze base color which contrast against the ruby red fine color. The Exterior bowls decorated with some medallion, masterfully hand painting with archaic red phoenix. The Chinese phoenix is considered the representative of all feathered creatures. The phoenix is such an important bird in Chinese symbolism that we have a separate section dedicated to it; it is put in the same section as dragons as the phoenix and dragon are paired, the dragon represents the Emperor and yang; the phoenix the Empress and yin. To use the name âphoenixâ is a bit misleading as there is no legend in China about reincarnation from ashes as there is about the Egyptian mythical bird â. In China it was a god of the winds. The vermillion (red) phoenix represents the most important of directions - south. In symbolism the dragon and phoenix together represent a married couple. The phoenix alone is a symbol of joy and peace, it heralds the coming of auspicious days just like the qilin. This piece displays a subtle sheen as the light ricochets across the finely exterior, glazed smooth, brilliant with a moist appearance, the finishing meticulous. The Under-base bears reign mark, a six underglaze blue seal script characters reign mark, Made In The Years of Daoguang Emperor Reign Period of The Great Qing Dynasty.Measurements: Height: 2-5/8" Diameter: 5-3/4" (each) PROVENANCE:From the estate of Harold & Mousser, of York, Pennsylvania, an entrepeneurs, private collections, acquired pre-1970's from Fluhrer's Galleries, York, PA.
