A carved schist frieze fragment including one right-angled corner; pediment and base supported by two tapering columns with tiered base and acanthus-leaf capital; figure of Buddha sitting facing in pleated robe; smaller standing robed figure with one hand raised in reassurance (a bodhisattva?); mounted on a custom-made stand. 11.1 kg, 41.5cm (16 1/4"). Property of a South East London gentleman; formerly acquired in 2003 from a Mayfair gallery; previously in an old collection formed before 1990.
