Description

Late 3rd-early 2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of bronze stamp seals, some accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (T-796) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 41 x 40 x 16 mm. This is a round with scalloped outer edge. The face is flat, the back also, on which is mounted a loop handle. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a cross the arms of which merge into a looping hand surrounding it. This creates four heart-shaped hollows. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in very good condition and has an unusual design.'; (V-534) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 33 x 34 x 16 mm. This is roughly round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central circle joined to a plain outer rim by six bands of increasing width as they move from centre to edge. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is covered with heavy incrustation, which could be removed. It is in fair condition.'; (V-531) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 30 x 28 x 12 mm. This was originally square, with flat face and flat back on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central Greek cross joined to the outer rim by two joined oblongs on each arm. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. Two corner [sic] are a little damaged, but the whole is still present and in fair condition.'; (D-12) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 47 x 47 x 17 mm. This is an is open-work and compartmented seal with round flat face and handle of inverted V-shape on the flat back. The design shows a small circle in the middle, with a narrow band around it, from which eight arms spread out to the outer band, which has a scalloped edge. The arms are narrower at the centre than at the edge. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in good condition.'; (T-165) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 40 x 39 x 18 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, is a pattern based on a large central circle surrounded by two bands of rough oblongs: five in the inner band, ten in the outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The metal is in good condition, and the piece generally is also in good condition, and the piece generally is also in good condition, there being only a little denting of the outer rim.'; (R-842) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 51 x 49 x 13 mm. This is an open-work seal, as if made from metal strip, with a central circle containing two crossing lines which divided this circle into four rough triangles, two of which are then further divided by struts joining the two crossing strokes, creating two small triangles near the centre, and irregular shapes beyond. The outer rim has four inverted U-shapes joined on to it. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in good condition save that one of the outer U-shapes is damaged.'; (U-399) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 34 x 34 x 11 mm. This bears the shape of the design, with flat compartmented faces and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of concentric circles with four small circles spaced around the central ones, each within a linear frame. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a less common design, and is generally in good condition, the outer edges being somewhat worn down, and the handle worn through.' 165 grams total, 23-35mm (1 - 1 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
