10th-12th century AD. A bronze Byzantine-manufactured convex pendant with hinged bar, polychrome enamelled ornament to both faces of addorsed birds flanking a tree. Cf. Rybakov, B.A. Yazychestvo Drevney Rusi, Moscow, 1987, Fig. 95, 102. 19.3 grams, 32mm (1 1/4"). Property of a professional collector; acquired before 1990. Byzantine enamelled jewellery and other items were popular ornaments in use by people in the River Volga area, including the Rus at Kiev.
