Albumen photograph, 5.5 x 6.5 in., on 6.5 x 8 in. mount. A rarely seen portrait of Joao M. Celestino, a Portuguese sea captain seized in the round up following Lincoln's assassination. Although lacking a studio imprint, this photograph was originally taken by Alexander Gardner aboard the USS Montauk on April 27, 1865. Celestino, who became a suspect after independently threatening William H. Seward, was arrested in Philadelphia on April 18. The charges against him were dropped June 17, and he was released on July 8.Â
