Addressed on integral leaf."I said that I would keep you posted while on this journey. I am about 500 miles from Downieville. This place consists of a great valley, called the Rogue river Valley. This place was inhabited by a tribe of very savage Indians, from which it derives its name. Said Indians have been whiped [sic] out of the country whith [sic] the exception of a few remaining, who dare not commit depredations....The Indians in this State are of a more robust and far better looking people than they are in California. No one here leaves the settlements because if you are caught ought [out?] by Indians they will kill you. The people of this place gave 300 Dollars for the heads of three Indians which were brought in this place last week."On a geography note: "...I left Downieville on Sunday, week before last; got in Marysville on Monday; left Marysville Tuesday; got in Shasta (county and city) on Tuesday at night; left Shasta on Wensday [sic] morning;...got in Yreka [sic] (the city of Siskiyou county) at Friday night; left Yreka on Monday morning and came in this place at night. ...I think I will write you a letter when I get at cresent [sic] city at that Place, I will take the steemer [sic] for Sanfrancisco [sic]. If any thing should happen you can know when it must have occurred...."
