Geronimo (1829-1909). Apache Indian Chief. Business card identified to J. Van Inwagen, President, Tiffany Enameled Brick Company, 2.25 x 3.875 in., with penciled autograph on reverse side from Geronimo, and small note written below that reads, "Done by the old chief for J.V.- Buffalo - 1901." The consignor's Great-Great Grandfather, J.V. (James Van Inwagen) lived in Buffalo in 1901 and attended the Pan American Exposition that year, a year that Geronimo was also present. Consignor relates that the small note on the bottom was written by her Great-Great Grandmother. At some point in his captivity, Geronimo learned to read a bit and write his name, and later even embraced Christianity. His writing always had a child-like quality, and he preferred pencil to pen. He also seemed to like to embellish his signature.
