象在佛教中是高贵的象征，常以象王来譬喻佛的举止如象中之王。《大般若波罗蜜多经》中载：“佛有八十种好，进止如象王，行步如鹅王，容仪如狮子王”。《无量寿经》中记载，“菩萨犹如象王，因其善调伏之象鼻耳，做仰天长啸状态，气势威猛 ；三足象鼻腿，其盖镂空，器身三底足皆为象头，颇具异域风情。炉盖上为一象，回首俯卧于顶，象鼻弯曲，双目斜视，炯炯有神，一派富态安逸之情，取义太平有象，吉祥安康，天下太平；腹部开窗饰海水江崖以及数只瑞兽，形制少见，器型硕大，保存完好，, 非皇室官宦之家不能拥也，传世之珍品。
