TWO PAINTINGS OF A BODHISATTVA ON A THRONE, MING China, late 16th - mid-17th century. Ink and color on silk. The Bodhisattva, probably Akasagarbha, is portrayed seated on a sumptuous throne in front of a circular halo, flanked by four dragons, wearing long flowing and embroidered robes and an enameled gold crown, holding a scepter. (2) Condition: Laid down on board. Darkened, some soiling, tears and creases, minor losses, abrasions. Some touch-ups. Old frame with losses to paint and traces of use. Provenance: From a French estate. Old collector inventory number "C.337" to lower left. Dimensions: 137 x 68 cm (the painting). Auction result comparison: Compare with a portrayal of Akasagarbha Bodhisattva at Sotheby's Paris on June 11th, 2019, in Arts d'Asie, lot 23.
