HEAD OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, C. 15th to 16th CENTURY Ayutthya Kingdom (Siam). Important and rather large head with the typical stylistic character of the Ayutthya period (until 1767), but also the influence of its classic precursor, the Sukhothai. The curved eye contours, also the fine nose and lips with accentuated corners in addition to the entire head form, which highlights the spiritual appeal by widening at the top. Strong high-arched eyebrows and a corresponding hairline. Domed ushnisha with a large flame on top (fragment). Gracefully mounted on a quadratic red marble base with black sprinkles. Condition: Overall well-preserved. The ears are intact for the most part. Remnants of a former lacquer coating that quite certainly carried a layer of gilding over it. Provenance: From the Swiss collection Zuberbuehler. Dimensions: Height with base 30.5 cm. Height without base 10.2 cm.
