A YELLOW BRONZE ALTAR WITH THE JAIN DIVINITY TIRTHANKARA, C. 15th CENTURY Western India. A tirthankara, or jina, seated in a fully meditative position under a baldachin. Multi-tiered pedestal with decorative openwork and multiple accompanying figures strung together vertically on the arch-shaped background. On the back is an inscription, probably with - as is typical - a dating. The figure of the naked jina is delicately executed, deep patina and somewhat worn down due to cultic "grasping". Condition: Good condition with a fine and honest patina; minor losses. Provenance: Ex North German private collection, acquired before 1956 according to information provided. Dimensions: Height 10.8 cm.
