Herminie Deherain, French 1798-1839- Lady in her bedchamber with a suitor and attendants; oil on canvas, signed and dated 1833, 81.5x65.5cm The canvas has been relined circa mid-late 20th century. Replacement stretcher with single horizontal cross brace. Even craquelure visible across the paint surface. The painting has been varnished in recent years. Under inspection with UV lamp, there is evidence of retouching around the edges of the canvas where old frame rubbing has resulted in loss of paint. Retouching is also evident in the lower right section in the dress of the nun, below the man's right knee, in the white bedding and woman's clothing, some retouching to the faces of the two female figures and in the background. The retouching has been completed to a high standard. Please see images for further details. The painting is in very good fully restored condition. Held in an English 19th century gilded composition Louis XIII style frame with plain gold slip. The Frame is subject to some cracking to the gesso mouldings and overpainting in gold-coloured paint.
