Beautiful Impressionist-style landscape by Cullen Yates, an artist born in Bryan. Ohio. (Is that why he added "Bryan" to his name here?) He studied with William Merritt Chase and went to art school in Paris. In 1900 he joined other artists in Connecticut and was a founder of the Lyme Art colony. He was a long-time resident of Shawnee on Delaware, just south of the Poconos in Pennsylvania, and was one of the few artists in the northeast to be inducted into the National Academy of Art. He was well-known for coastal river landscapes, and his paintings have been compared to those of Winslow Homer. The painting here is titled "Spring Shawnee Pa" on the verso. It is signed in the lower left and comes in a beautiful gilt-colored frame. Light craquelure at the top. The overall size is 18 1/4 x 22 1/2 in. wide and the sight size is 11 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. wide.
