Literature: Hans-Peter Trenschel: Johann Benedikt Witz, Fränkische Kleinplastik des Rokoko, Würzburg 1980. Regarding the type compare fig. 48, 49, 52 and 65. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of his death, the 'Mainfränkische' museum in Würzburg, dedicated an extensive exhibition to Johann Benedikt Witz in 1980. The probably most important master of Franconian small-sculptures was born in 1709 as the son of a blacksmith in Trappstedt. Following the family tradition, Witz first learned the blacksmith's craft. After the obligatory years of apprenticeship and travelling and after the wedding to Margarethe Reth, Witz wanted to settle in Würzburg in the early 1740s. Furthermore, he received training by a Würzburg wood-carver, possibly Johann Joseph Kessler. However, woodcarving was not pursued by him as his main profession as he took up a position as constable in the artillery of the prince-bishop of Würzburg. Throughout his life Witz remained loyal to military service. The avocational occupation as a woodcarver still was crowned with success, as he produced a large number of high-quality small sculptures for mostly private clients. These fascinating and vivid miniature carvings illustrate mostly religious contents. An exquisite collection of these sculptures, carved by this grandmaster of rococo, is presented at the 'Mainfränkische' Museum Würzburg'. Explanations to the Catalogue Würzburg Early Works of Art 18th century Mirror Wood KLEINE MUSEALE ROKOKO SPIEGELKARTUSCHE. Würzburg. Datierung: Um 1770-75. Meister/Entwerfer: Johann Benedikt Witz (1709-1780) zugeschrieben. Technik: Birnbaumholz geschnitzt. Spiegelglas. Jahrhundert Spiegel Holz
