JD 018 Unique Japanese Antique Woven Bamboo Ikebana Flower Vessel Basket Excellent Condition Approximate dimensions: 10" wide X 9.5" tall. 5" diameter opening at top.  Purchased from an Antique Dealer in Tokyo in late 1980s. This is a one-of-a-kind unique piece of Japanese art. Antique Japanese Ikebana baskets were brought to Japan by the Chinese centuries ago, and were elevated to a high art form in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  The baskets are traditionally utilized in the tea ceremony as containers for the minimalist-style Ikebana flower arrangements intended to inspire the quiet contemplation of natural beauty.  Becae they are handmade by artisans, the baskets are each unique, and vary widely in size and design.
