A Waiwai Cosmetic Basket and a South American Hand Broom Guyana/Northern Brazil, 20th century The cosmetic case is made of double-weave split cane in natural and dark contrasting colors. The pattern is one of opposing scorpions contained with geometric linear patterns. A case such as this is worn suspended from the shoulder and contained toilet articles: a comb, mirror, fire-making instruments and other personal items. Generally, they are made by a man for his wife and in-laws as partial payment for their daughter. The hand broom is complex construction of wood and reeds. Both in good condition.
