A Superb Sihuas Mantle Front Peru, c. 100 - 400 AD Tightly woven camelid wool with double interlocking warp and weft; a rich maroon ground with ocher, white and black, depicting a central abstract spider or sun design with stylized human figures around. The red mouth of the central face shows three black teeth, and there are staggered red and ocher "tear" marks on the cheeks. Four spider-like creatures under the top and bottom arms. Sectional fringe along edges in alternating red and white, long braided ties from each corner. In good condition; major replacement area in the lower right quadrant, with scattered patches and staining primarily on the right side; professionally mounted to linen on stretcher bars.
