(8) George Aitken "The Spectator", complete in 8 Volumes (John C Nimmo, London 1898); "The Spectator" has been printed from a copy of the original collected and revised edition published 1712-15 by Richard Steele and Joseph Addison. It was a periodical meant "to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality... to bring philosophy out of the closets and libraries, schools and colleges, to dwell in clubs and assemblies, at tea-tables and coffeehouses" and promoted marriage, family and courtesy.
