Manuscript Letters from George William Curtis (1824-1892) and William M Meredith (1799 - 1873). Meredith with a lawyer and politician from Philadelphia, and Secretary of the Treasury for President Zachary Taylor. --- Also included is a second letter from American writer and public speaker, as well as editor of Harper's Weekly, George W Curtis. A Republican, he spoke in favor of African-American equality and civil rights. Presumably to H.C. Carey (1793 - 1879), noted to an illegible letter and then "Carey" --- "15 Jan, 1860 -- Thanks, my dear Sir, for your very kind note, and 'contents noted'. I still think that I could not have retired under a ? without having surrendered the right of free speech in the most equanimous manner. Such a sight can only be averted and vindicated when it is questioned. I look with great interest for the account of the dinner yesterday. Faithfully yours, G.W. Curtis"
