François-Vincent Toussaint "Manners, translated from the French: wherein the Principles of Morality or Social Duties" (W. Johnston, London 1751); rebound, an extraordinarily rare book with a truly fitting and delightful story surrounding it. --- With the original owners name crossed out, we start with the signature of Joseph Hopkinson (1770 - 1842) on the title page. We then turn to the second page where we find a note from Richard Rush (1780 - 1859), the third child of Dr. Benjamin Rush (1746 -1813) and Julia Stockton (1759 - 1848). Educated at Princeton, and having attracted the attention of President Madison, he was named comptroller of the U.S. Treasury in 1812. As a result of his efforts, he is now widely credited by historians for restoring diplomatic ties with Great Britain after the War of 1812. In 1836 he was sent to Great Britain, this time to secure the estate of John Smithson on behalf of the United States. This bequest was later used to found the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. His note reads as follows: "In the new placing of my books in town, this has caught my eye. By what chance it has been so long among mine, I know not. It turned up to my surprise. It should be returned to Mr. Hopkinson's family - say to his eldest son - R.R., Phila Feb. 58" Then, attached when rebound, is a letter dating 1875 from Benjamin Rush (1811 - 1877), the grandson of Dr. Rush himself. The letter states : "Dear Sir, A long illness after the death of my Father; a subsequent absence in Europe for many years, & continued illness since my return; have prevented my complying sooner with the direction on the flyleaf of the accompanying little volume, which has just come under my notice. May I ask the favor of you to acknowledge its receipt by the Bearer. Yours faithfully, Benjamin Rush." The letter, sent to Oliver Hopkinson (1812 - 1905) along with the book, tells an incredible tale of the journey of this book and its evidence of the link between the Hopkinson and Rush families, as Dr. Rush was a prominent member of The Founding Fathers along with Francis Hopkinson (1737-1791). And to add a recent addition to this story, pages 3 - 22 of the preface were found separated from the book, among the large assortment of documents included in the estate from the Hopkinson Family.
