Manuscript Log Book and General Orders of the USS Franklin, the first vessel to be laid down at the Philadelphia Navy Yard 1815. Includes signature of Commodore Charles Stewart as well as financial details pertaining to Baring Brothers London. There are also numerous dried plant specimins preserved between the pages. "General Orders for the government and discipline of the United States ship of war the Franklin 74 bearing the broad pendants of Commodore Charles Stewart; Henry E Ballard Esq. Commander 1817. There are 81 numbered rules spanning eight pages front and back, with rule 45 being "No tobacco to be smoked but forward of the gully on the main deck."
