A Chinese carved and painted sandstone figure of a BodhisattvaTang dynasty or laterDepicted standing in a slight "thrice-curved" posture upon an open lotus flower with right hand raised, the other hand lowered and lightly lifting a draped sash, the full face carved with arched brows sweeping above gently closed eyes, plump lips carved with a clearly defined bowed outline, neck incised with three lines above necklaces, dressed in clinging draperies with trailing scarves, necklaces gathered at the waist with a floral medallion, dhoti carved in cascading folds following the hips, remnants of red, blue, and green pigment to surfaces, modern stand. NOTE: It has been suggested that such sculptures of a buff or pinkish-red sandstone originate in Sichuan province. Compare two sandstone figures from the collection of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, sold at Christie's, New York, March 20, 2015 lots 761 and 762. The figures are similar in execution and stone, as well as disposition of retained pigments and surface.
