A Large Japanese Seto Ware Stoneware Dish - Edo Period. It is a little warped and is coated in glaze that varies in thickness and in colour, the predominant colour being an orange-brown but around the rim is a cream colour with hints of purple here and there. To parts of the rim, especially on the underside, the thick glaze has "crawled" from the body during firing. The base and foot remain unglazed. The dish has five spur marks on the interior, and kiln scars on both surfaces, these wares having been fired in stacks. Diameter 25.5cm (10 inches). Latter part of the Edo period (1603 - 1868).
Provenance: from the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton.
