Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) Danseuse, 1917 Watercolor on paper laid on rice paper 10-1/2 x 8 inches (26.7 x 20.3 cm) Numbered, initialed, dated, and signed lower right: 475 / SD.17 / 1917 / Sonia Delaunay PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF ELAINE AND PERRY SNYDERMAN PROVENANCE: Brito Collection, Portugal; Artcurial, Paris; Leonard Hutton Galleries, New York. EXHIBITED: Galerie Gmurzynska, Cologne, "Malerei im Prisma--Freundkreis Sonia und Robert Delaunay," April 29-July 26, 1991; Leonard Hutton Galleries, New York, "Sonia Delaunay: Works of the Teens and Twenties," April 4-May 26, 1995. LITERATURE: Sonia Delaunay: Works of the Teens and Twenties, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1995, p. 49, no. 26, illustrated. NOTE: Sonia and Robert Delaunay went to Spain in 1914 for the health of their son and remained in Spain and Portugal until 1920. This watercolor, executed in Madrid in 1917, is from a series featuring flamenco dancers, whose artistry had captivated Sonia. Distinct color bands and circles define the dancer's costume, while alternating elongated and truncated black lines suggest her stomping legs. This work is accompanied by photocopy of a photo-certificate from the artist dated Paris, March 3, 1973, and is listed as No. 475 in her inventory.
