NOTE: In 1982 the Temple Sholom in Chicago, with the patronage of congregant Burt Rollo, commissioned the Dutch artist Karel Appel to execute for the sanctuary four stained glass windows illustrating scenes from the life of the Biblical King David. Art patrons Elaine and Perry Snyderman purchased the large-scale gouache studies for the windows, which, exemplifying Appel’s CoBrA style, combine Matissean bold color and cutout shapes with whimsical child-like images. Panel 1 shows David the Shepherd among a motley flock; Panel 2, David the Psalmist playing a lyre for King Saul; Panel 3, David the Warrior, with his slingshot about to challenge Goliath; and Panel 4, David the Anointed King, finally smiling after finding his true calling.
