经筒，又称为如法经筒，为安置佛经经卷的容器。据传，早期因有僧人担心佛教于末法时代灭亡，从而导致佛教经典不能保存，故制作经筒，以求佛教再兴之时，佛法经典能继续流传于世。此经筒呈长圆型，中空放置经书，两侧为筒盖。其正中榜题“西大寺御福讲”六字，字体规整雅致，昭示出此件经筒的不凡身份。书题两侧刻凤鸟装饰，两端筒盖边缘亦錾刻凤鸟纹样与之呼应。凤鸟姿态高贵，羽毛细节刻画写实，具有皇家工艺的气韵。从此经筒精致的做工、华丽的装饰来看，应长期被宫内女眷所持有，具有极高的艺术价值和文化价值
