Matthew Panana (Jemez Pueblo, 20th century) pink stone. Contemporary sculpture of a Native American woman, on wood base with plaque on front stating "Hopi Maiden, Matthew Panana." Dimensions: 23 1/4 inches tall X 9 3/4 inches wide X 6 1/2 inches deep; 59.1 cm tall X 24.8 cm wide X 16.5 cm deep. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Sculpture has scuffs to front of robe and a scratch to back at robe bottom. Plaque on front of base is loose. Provenance: From a collection in Northern Virginia. Artist Biography: Matthew Panana is a graduate of IAIA (Institute of American Indian Arts) and was commissioned to create a monumental sculpture for the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque. He is also a first prize winner in stone works at the Santa Fe Indian market judged competitions.
