剔红，又称雕红漆，为漆器工艺的一种，此技法成熟于宋元时期，于明清两代广为流传。其法常以木灰、金属为胎，在胎骨上层层髹红漆，待半干时描上画稿，然后再雕刻花纹。明代曹昭在《格古要论·剔红》中有述：“剔红器皿，无新旧，但看朱厚色鲜红润坚重者为好。”此菱口盘光泽润雅，雕刻刀工精到之至，盈巧颇有逸趣。构思巧妙，创造丰富层次：底层水纹，刻画得丝毫入微，密而不乱；中层锦地，雕刻严谨，繁而不杂；表层弥勒与嬉戏的童子，立体生动，浮雕立体感很强。主体纹饰中，弥勒宽袍广袖，袒胸露腹，笑盈满面，神情逼真，情态动人。全器构思巧妙，极尽精微之美，严谨细致之外，妙显轻松神韵，甚为难得。
