c. 211 AD. Roman. Gold ring comprising circular hoop and elliptical bezel with carnelian intaglio setting showing the confronted figures of Caracalla and Geta. These two emperors, sons of Septimius Severus, briefly reigned together following the death of their father in 211 but proved incapable of sharing power. Geta was soon murdered by troops under Caracalla’s command. This beautiful piece probably dates to the short period of their co-reign. Excellent condition; wearable.Size: D: 21.3mm / US: 11 7/8 / UK: X1/2; 4.65g; Provenance: Property of a professional Ancient art and jewelry expert; previously with a London gallery; initially from a private British collection formed in the 1990s.
