C. 500-200 BC, Phoenician. Gold pendant, which depicts the goddess Tanit, comprising a round head, outstretched arms and splayed legs, supended by a loop and ornamented with granulation. Tanit was a Phoencian and later Punic goddess, who was regarded as chief deity alongside her consort Baal-Hamon. She was particularly prominent in Carthage, Rome's great rival during the Punic Wars. Excellent, wearable condition; Size: L:35.6mm / W:24mm ; 4.86g; Provenance: Property of a London doctor; formerly in the private collection of a gentleman living in Oxford; acquired from on the UK art markets since mid-1980s.
