c. 323-31 BC. Greek Hellenistic period. A gold pendant with a circular, ribbed suspension loop, cylindrical body and amethyst setting. The exteriors of the body and suspension loop are covered in intricate corded designs; wave designs are also visible on the body of the piece. Amethysts were considered in antiquity to provide protection against drunkenness, perhaps suggesting that this item once belonged to someone who wanted to make sure that having a little tipple did not get too out of hand! The Hellenistic period, which runs from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC to the battle of Actium is 31 BC, was an era in which Greek-speaking peoples controlled much of the Eastern Mediterranean and Western Asia as far as present-day Afghanistan. This period saw many momentous scientific discoveries and artistic developments, including the creation of exceptionally intricate jewellery, as this gorgeous piece exemplifies. Excellent condition; wearable; Size: L:20.6mm / W:10.5mm ; 3.3g; Provenance: From the collection of a gentleman based in London; formerly with a British gallery; acquired in the 1990s.
