700-1100 AD. Viking Age. Silver ring with D-shaped hoop and square bezel bearing incised Solomon’s knot motif. Solomon's knot is a traditional decorative motif used since ancient times, and found in many cultures. Despite the name, it is classified as a link, and is not a true knot according to the definitions of mathematical knot theory. Its precise significance in Viking society is unclear but it may reflect early Christian influences as this motif was particularly popular in the medieval Mediterranean. Excellent condition; wearable. Size: D: 19.1mm / US: 9 1/8 / UK: S; 2.3g; Provenance: Important London collection of Ancient art; formed in 1970s then passed by descent.
