Lucas Cranach the Elder, studio or circle of Lucretia Oil on panel (parquetted). 21.5 x 16.5 cm. Provenance In the collection of Baron von Eckardstein in Plattenburg in around 1909. - Rhenish aristocratic ownership. - Lempertz auction 802, 19.05.2001, lot 1027. - Subsequently in a Lower Saxon private collection. Dieter Koepplin noted in a letter to the then owner of this painting in 1988 that the work is an authentic piece by Lucas Cranach the Elder and was probably painted in around 1530/35. Koepplin once again confirmed his attribution in a letter from 2001. However, Werner Schade considered it possible that the painting was created with the collaboration of the Cranach workshop. We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Gunnar Heydenreich of the Cranach Digital Archive (cda) and the Cologne Institute of Conservation Sciences (CICS) of the TH Köln for the art-technological examination and the stylistic classification of the work, according to which the panel was probably created in Cranach's workshop or in his immediate circle. Lucas Cranach d. - Rheinischer Adelsbesitz. - 802. Lempertz-Auktion, 19.5.2001, Lot 1027. - Seitdem in niedersächsischer Privatsammlung.
