Literature Bonetti 2008, ill. p. 44 and p. 149 (cat. 36) The Colosseum was one of the preferred motifs of Roman iconography. The ruins of the monumental structure lent themselves especially well to the depiction of the power and decline of the Roman empire. To the right of the vague outline of a male figure, we see the Meta Sudans, an ancient fountain. In the earlier of these two shots by Caneva, we do not yet see the commemorative marble plaque that was placed between the ground-level arcades and those of the first story during the inaugural celebrations of the rebuilding project begun by Pope Pius IX in late 1852. (Kat. 36) Das Kolosseum war ein bevorzugtes Bildmotiv der römischen Ikonographie, eignete sich die Ruine des monumentalen Bauwerks doch besonders gut dazu, Macht und Niedergang des römischen Reiches darzustellen. Rechts von der schemenhaft zu erkennenden, männlichen Figur steht die Meta Sudans, eine antike Brunnenanlage. In der früheren der beiden Aufnahmen Canevas ist die marmorne Gedenktafel, die Ende 1852 zur Feier der von Pius IX. begonnenen Restaurierungsarbeiten zwischen den ebenerdigen Arkaden und denen des ersten Geschosses angebracht wurde, noch nicht zu erkennen.
