玉在火里烧到一定程度的时候，会发黑，和墨玉很接近,如果是真的白玉中带墨色，那么会有明显界限，黑白分明；如果是火烧成的话，则黑白不分，并且容易出现裂缝和网状条纹。晚清时期，宫廷失火，曾烧毁了大量的器物，被烧玉器中产生的颜色变有白、灰和黑色。其中确有黑似焦油而表面光亮的，此件玉璧为满足古人对色彩变化的追求，制作而成，历史年代感足，具有历史价值。
