圆勒子有上下一样粗的圆状，也有中间缩为细腰形的，或中间粗两头细的橄榄形的，或一头粗一头细的喇叭形、秤砣形等。方勒子为方柱形，与琮相似，只是大小不同。有种说法认为琮是勒子的放大，或勒子是琮的缩小，但从考古发现来看，方勒子与琮常是同地出土，故它们之间不存在相仿的问题。用作礼器的，形体须大方显威严，称琮；用作佩饰的，形体要小才方便，称勒子。
