A group of three icons, late 19th / 20th century, to include a two-sided Russian icon depicting the Virgin of the Sign on one side and a scene of two saints, possibly Matthew the Apostle and Catherine of Alexandria, to the verso, 27.5cm x 21cm, together with a Greek icon of the Virgin Hodegetria (showing the way) in the form of the central panel of a triptych, lacking door panels, the Virgin crowned by two angels against a blue backdrop, the scene set within a Romanesque arch frame with moulded cornice and base, 36cm x 22.5cm, and a further unrelated door panel, 26cm x 9cm (3) Note: If one were to accept the identity of the two saints on the first panel of this lot, it may be noted that the presence of Matthew the Apostle alongside Catherine of Alexandria is unusual. However, the reason for this arrangement may be explained through an understanding of the identity of who originally owned the icon. St Catherine may be a namesake saint of the owner, while St Matthew may indicate a Jewish ethnicity, since Matthew's gospel is known to have been written for a Jewish Christian community.
