甪端四肢蹲坐，独角昂首，怒目阔嘴，头部、背部鬃毛卷曲浓密，形象凶猛威武。通体施窑变釉，垂流自然，起棱处因釉汁流淌较薄呈月白色，积釉处浓艳，红紫二色交融，似厚密的毛发，极富意趣。
甪端，是古代传说中的神兽，《宋书•符瑞志下》：“甪端日行万八千里，又晓四夷之语，圣主在位，明达方外幽远，则奉书而至”。故而历代帝王喜用甪端形象护卫在侧，既寓意通晓天下，光明睿智，又象征吉祥如意，风调雨顺。
