Description

Group of Jack Shackelford Autograph Letters Signed. Four letters written by Mexican War soldier and doctor, Jack Shackelford with one letter where he is the recipient. The letters consisting mostly of correspondence between Shackelford and Samuel Mardis, a member of the House of Representatives from Alabama. The majority of the content consist of discussions around setting up a bank and they range in date from 1830 to 1835 and include: Jack Shackelford 1830 Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10", Courtland; January 5, 1830. It reads in part: "...I would the Legislature establish a Bank, I much hope it will be located in this place – an efficient and intelligent directory might be obtained..." Mark Davis Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 8" x 10", Walnut Grove; April 15, 1831. He encloses a check (not included) for Shackelford for $130.12. Jack Shackelford 1832 Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10", Courtland; December 16, 1832. "...It is my wish to move my family and settle permanently or soon as I can provide a place for their comfort and in the interim, I wish to keep a clerk in the Office who will attend faithfully to the duties..." Jack Shackelford 1833 Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10", Courtland; August 26, 1833. "...I feel truly gratified at the result of the election, and although I...anticipated your success, yet my fears were some what excited by the various rumors which were from time to time circulated." Jack Shackelford 1835 Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10", Courland; January 16, 1835. "...We are all looking to Washington for news and wish much to know all the plans that are forming on the subject of President making judge White you see has been nominated by our Legislature be no doubt will do down well here..." COA from John Reznikoff of University Archives. Condition: 1831 letter has separated in full along the folds in several places with some areas of paper loss. Several tears resulting from opening of letters. Several spots of ink burn with smudging along with intermittent staining, toning and foxing.
