PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA ATTRIBUTED QUAKER PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, center signed "Sarah W Humphreys. / 1844" surrounded by various pictorial motifs of flowers and birds, bottom edge with central flower basket flanked by swans, three sides with scrolling flowering-vine border. Housed under UV glass and conservation mounted in a mahogany veneer frame with birds-eye maple corner blocks. This lot includes genealogical information. Dated 1844. 15 1/2" x 15 3/4" sight, 18 1/2" x 18 3/4" OA. Very good overall condition with some toning to linen, light fading and fugitive color to some thread, frame with minor wear, two scratches along bottom side. Not examined out of frame. Provenance: From the collection of Nick Routson, Phoenix, AZ.M. Finkel & Daughter, 11/15/2004 (retains dealer label). Catalogue Note: Identified as Sarah W. Humphreys, who was born on October 30, 1822 in Philadelphia, PA to parents John Humphreys (1791-1840) and Sarah Widdifield (1795-1823), both Quakers. Her parents married on May 11, 1814, and the family resided in Philadelphia. On p. 448 of "History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family", it is noted that Sarah was unmarried and died on May 19, 1861 in Philadelphia. She would have been around 21 or 22 when she created this sampler.
