Catalogue Note: Emma-Henriette (Reitzes) Schiff von Suvero (1873-1939) was a member of an important and wealthy Jewish family, who owned and lived in the Palais Reitzes in the center of Vienna. After the 1938 annexation of Austria by the Nazi German Reich, Emma-Henriette's art collection, which included textiles and porcelain, was officially inventoried in July of that year and valued at over 100,000 Reichmarks. She died of natural causes at the beginning of 1939, her nephew Erwin Reitzes attempted to export his aunt's collection, but was forced to sell it through the lawyer Dr. Alfons Bodart to the Kunstgewerbemuseum (now Museum fur Angewandte Kunst) in Vienna. It appears none of the collection was displayed at the museum, but rather kept in excellent storage conditions allowing the textiles to be perfectly preserved.
