Two playful cats are carved in the round with one cat holding a butterfly in its mouth. Cats playing and pursuing butterflies are common scenes in the garden courtyard. To the Chinese, age 90 is mao same pronunciation as cat, and age 80 is die (same sound with butterfly). As such, maodie connotes people in their eighties to the nineties. This expression is used to wish for health and longevity for the aged. This is often used in painting themes since the Song dynasty. During the Qing period, this is also a common theme for jade carvings.
