Enamel on copper miniature after a painting by Sir William Beechey depicting the sitter in a three-quarter view against a grey background dressed in a black coat and a white neck scarf. In the original fire-gilt bronze surround engraved lower right "Enamel H. Bone R.A.". Mounted on velvet and set into a carved wooden frame. Fully signed, dated and inscribed on the green and white speckled counter enamel of the reverse. Ca. 12 x 10 cm. Outer dimensions of frame 29 x 22.5 cm. Henry Bone, London 1816. Inscribed on the reverse “Tho. Roberts Jr. Esq. London May 1816 painted by Henry Bone R.A. enamel painter in order to his Majesty & enamel painter to H.R.H. the Prince Regent after the original by Sir W. Beechey R.A.”. The English artist Henry Bone (Truro 1755 - London 1834) was one of the most important miniaturists of his time. He worked as an enamel painter under the royal patronage of George III, the Prince Regent and later George IV and William IV and mainly executed copies after portraits of famous personalities. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts where he exhibited from 1781 - 1832. His portraits, painted with the highest accuracy, can be found in many museums, including the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Provenance The H. and I.
