Piero Cappuccilli (Trieste 1926 – ivi 2005) Born to parents from Ripabottoni in the Molise region of Italy, after beginning his architectural studies in Rome, he discovered an interest in opera and in 1956 he made his debut at the "Teatro Nuovo" in Milan in Pagliacci. In 1957, he won the 'Viotti Competition' in Vercelli, which took him on a long tour of 34 performances of Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia in Germany, a title he would return to only occasionally afterwards, including a recording. Within a few years he was specialising mainly in Verdi's repertoire and from the early 1960s began appearing in the main Italian and foreign theatres (his 1960 debut at the Metropolitan in La traviata, which remained his only appearance at the Met), establishing himself as one of the most successful baritones of the new generation. In the 1970s and 1980s he performed mainly in Milan, Paris and Strasbourg. His career continued until 1992, when, on his return from a performance at the Arena, he had a serious car accident that forced him to retire. He then devoted himself to teaching.
