最初的鼻烟壶都是普通料器制作的。到康熙时，发展为艺术欣赏品了。清宫内廷所烧的料器烟壶，称为官料鼻烟壶。康熙时的官料已甚精美，仿天然矿石、宝石如雄黄、玛瑙、琥珀、翡翠和羊脂白玉等，几乎可以乱真。仿雄黄料，取其富丽堂皇的色彩、驱邪扶正的寓意和“黄”皇”高贵的谐音内涵，在清代曾是宫廷御用极为珍贵的官料。
