Royal Family Set of Blue and White Porcelain Gold Rimmed Teacups & Round Tray W/Underglazed Crabs & Lotus Design (Has Four Character Mark) - These pieces are made of white porcelain and have a blue underglaze depicting a lovely scene of a pair of crabs among lotus flowers. The crab symbolizes a wish to have many children so that the family can be expanded and prolonged. The cups are finished with gold rims, a practice that was only done for royal family commissioned pieces. Selected vessels were finished with rims of silver or gold as early as the Han dynasty to set them apart from the ordinary and to make them suitable for high class clients.
