Vietnamese Emperor's (Nguyen Phuc Ung Ai) Wood Monumental Screen W/Imperial White, Green & Red Jade Dragon Inlay, Bat & Peach Motif, & Longevity Character (Has Four Character Mark in Gilt Gold) From Palace- This spectacular piece was elaborately hand carved out of solid wood. This stunning room divider screen has an overall dragon motif, with five clawed dragons in inlaid vibrant white, mutton phat and green jades, chasing the flaming pearl. The dragons have five claws, which indicates that this piece was made for the empire and the royal family, as the five clawed dragon is known to symbolize the Emperor. The dragon also has blood red imperial jade set into the piece. The red jade piece measures approximately 5/8" in diameter, the first wooden panel of the screen has a 34" long high reliefe White Jade dragon, the second panel has a 34" white jade dragon, the center panel has a green a white jade scene with grushed 24K gold powder that measures 38" long and the two outer panels each also have a 34" white jade dragon. The dragons and scene are all very high relief, and raise off of the screen approximately 2" (at highest point). This piece was in the palace in Vietnam and was placed behind Emperor Nguyen Phuc Ung Ai royal throne. The background of the screen has been carved with scrolled clouds throughout, and geometrical accents bordering each of the five panels. In the center of the piece near the bottom you can see the longevity character, which is bordered by a scene on each side of five bats among peach branches. Peaches are known as omens of longevity and harbingers of happiness, and flowering peach branches are believed to ward off evil. Peaches were widely used to decorate imperial pieces for preceding emperors. The five bats are representative of five blessings: longevity, health, wealth, virtue, and natural death. The screen is accented with gilt gold details, and bears a four character mark in gilt gold, at the top center of the piece. This is an amazing investment piece that truly belongs in a museum, and this quality Imperial Jade can no longer be found. The screen measures a massive 120"W x 93"H x 10"D, and is in stunning condition. This piece is a lost treasure of Vietnam, and truly belongs in a museum of history. This piece has never been offered at auction.
