Tang Dynasty Hand Forged Metal Zhenmuyong Tomb Guardian - This piece was made during the Tang Dynasty of China (618-907 AD), and shows spectacular attention to detail. The piece was hand forged, and depicts a Zhenmuyong, or tomb guardian. Tang dynasty tomb figures are pottery figures of people and animals made in the Tang dynasty of China as grave goods to be placed in tombs. There was a belief that the figures represented would become available for the service of the deceased in the afterlife. Typically, the figures were made of moulded earthenware, however some rich tombs also contained figures in metal. These tomb guardians were standard in rich tombs, with a pair of "earth spirits" (zhenmushou) to keep the spirit of the dead from wandering outside the tomb, and a pair of "warrior guardians" (zhenmuyong) to protect the tomb from robbers or spirits. As was common for these tomb guardians, this warrior is seated with one foot higher than the other, and resting on a conquered demon. The statuette is in stunning condition, and truly belongs in a museum. Measures 14"H x 9"W x 4.5"D.
